Chapter 4

My sister rang the doorbell at nine the next morning. I had already showered, was on my second cup of coffee, and feeling good about the morning. I planned on going over to see Gavin as soon as my sister left, and having a sober discussion that would hopefully end in his bedroom.

"Look at you. Looking good." Maria burst into the room, her head swiveling to take in every detail of my house to determine how I was really looking. "I like the new colors," she said pointing at the walls.

I followed her to the kitchen. She climbed onto the stool at the kitchen peninsula and patted the other.

"So, you are really over Linda?"

"Yeah. Mostly. I still think about it from time to time, but more like, 'What the fuck was I thinking?'"

Maria nodded and waved for me to continue.

"Things had been bad for a while. From talking to others, it seems like everyone knew it but me."

She nodded again, and hopped off the stool to make coffee. "Want some more?"

"I'm good. This is my second already."

Maria leaned against the counter. Her eyes pierced me. Maria is three years older than me, and she never let me forget it. Our parents practically gave up on raising us when I was ten. It was like they had burnt out on parenting. Maria had made sure I went to class and finished my homework. She had been the one hit the hardest when I dropped out of college.

"So, what's the plan?"

"Plan?"

"I don't want you moping around for three years all alone in this house. What's the plan to get you dating again?"

You could leave and I'll go see Gavin right now, I thought. "I'm not sure. I'm not going to wait very long before opening back up. I have no interest in sitting around by myself."

Maria took a long sip of her coffee. She stared at me over the rim of the glass waiting for me to flinch and prove my words a lie. I didn't flinch.

"Very good." She tossed me a business card. "Give her a call. She's fun. It probably won't be long term but you'll have fun without anything needing to get too serious."

I passed it back to her. "Thanks, but I don't think I'll be needing a hook up. I have an interest that I'm working on developing. Like I said, I have no interest in sitting around by myself."

"Who?" she asked with a bite in her voice. She thought I was bullshitting her and would be sitting around alone in my underwear watching sports and eating cereal for the next year.

"I'm not ready to talk about it. But," I said loudly to override her protest. "But, I did join a bowling league. At least once a week, I'll get out of the house and hang with some friends. Plus, work. I won't be sitting around alone."

"Who's on the team?"

"Mark. Lucas. Gavin. He's the new guy next door."

"Single?"

The conversation had swung from her setting me up to her wanting me to set her up.
